Teaching Activities in Textiles

what is a Teaching Activity?

A teaching activity that is used in a classroom can be understood in different terms. Generally speaking, an activity, a purposely structured classroom tool that involves the learning of students and reaching potential set goals (J. Das, 2022).

Activities provide learners with opportunities to reflect on their current knowledge, understanding and skill sets that focus on key concepts. activities also encourage students to use effective communication and interactional skills (J. Das, 2022).

Below are some activities that will engage students in learning:

Using the Nelson Textile and Design Textbook on page 210: Historical Design Development.

Students are required to research a decade and answer the following questions!

1. What are some notable fashions during this period?

2. Was there a major event that influenced fashion and styles?

3. What colours were most popular during this time?

4. List two or three fashion designers who were influential during this time period?

5. What kind of accessories, such as shoes, jewelry and hats were popular during this time period?

6. How long did these fashions last before they began to change?

7. Has a part of this fashion look resurfaced During later decades? If so, when and how?

8. Do you think the style of this decade will resurface in the future? Why? Why not?

(J. Deagon, 2022).

Another fantastic activity for learners is using Adobe Express.

Formally known as Adobe Spark this little gem is a one stop shop for all things creative. Students will love using Adobe Express to create ideas that have an impact both inside and outside of school.

A mood board would be a fantastic activity to use adobe express for.

Ethical Consumerism what is it?

Ethical consumerism in defined in two different formats:

1. the protection of promotion of the interest of consumers, and

2. The preoccupation of society with the acquisition of consumer goods.

We will now focus on the second definition. The functional role of consumers in the 21st century is to buy more production in order to keep the industry going and help create more and cheaper products. What the industry doesn't see and take into account is the global impact it has on environmental factors and economic systems (T. Hunt, 2020).

With preoccupation of current societal trends and the acquisition of consumer good it now dismantling small societies across the globe. This places us in a situation where we advocate for ethical consumption and not ethical consumerism (T. Hunt, 2020).

While the prices might be low in some shops and retail establishments it doesn't reflect the on the true costs.  There are no considerations about the pollution that is created when making a garment or the unethical pay that some employees receive when making these goods (T. Hunt, 2020).
