Sustainability in Textiles

What is Sustainability in Textiles?

Sustainability in the textile industry underpins the manufacturing operation that becomes environmentally friendly. This means materials and undertakings including that of inputs and outputs are robust and riskless for humans and the living world at all stages of the life cycle. A lot of sustainable textiles are sourced from reusable or recycled products.

Overall, being sustainable in modern times has proven to reduce negative impacts on our environment while supporting individuals to earn a fair living under proper working conditions (S, Mallick. 2021).

What is Traceability?

Traceability is a common practice in businesses where they have the ability to tack products and purchases through a substantial and important process. Generally, it refers to the trajectory of tracing and tracking and prerequisites that include test runs of products. Tracing creates transparency and obtainability for every step of development.  The following are some high-level examples of traceability:

  • Risk mitigation
  • Quality control
  • Ship or release faster
  • Operational efficiency
  • Proving (not just meeting) compliance — in a fraction of the time                                  (Perforce, 2022)

How to encourage students to become ethical consumers?

How do we encourage students to become ethical consumers in our current climate? Personally, I would start by displaying the devastating impacts it has created on our planet and its inhabitants. I would encourage a whole class discussion and healthy debating on why it is important that we change how we spontaneously shop for products that are not ethical or sustainable. I would encourage students to motivate a shift in their thought process to help produce a negative footprint in ethical fashion.

Teach students the values of protecting the environment around them. List the key issues and have learners consider what may be an ethical consumer.

Mood Boards

Mood boards are often associated with collection of images or visual representations and play an essential role in defining and communicating a visual style or concept interpreting one's feelings and ideas (Wistia, 2021).

Check out the link below for an overview of a mood board.
